Fracture of Ring Apophsis of Lumbar Vertebral Body



Abstract
Fracture of ring apophysis of lumbar vertebral body is a cartilagenous or osseous lesion separated at the posterior margin of a vertebral body. It is unusual lesion associat-ed with trauma of repeated injury in adolescent and with symptom
suggestive of
an intervertebral disc herniation.
From May 1984 to may 1992, six patients who had fracture of ring apophysis of lumbar vertebral body had undergone operations at the Department of Orthopaedic Sur-gery, College of Medicine, Yonsei University.
@ES The following results were obtained.
@EN 1. The mean age was 23.1 years old ranged from fifteen to thirty-one.
2. There were 5 males and 1 female.
3. The major cause of fracture was trauma and 2 patients were associated with repetitive injury.
4. The major symptoms were low back pain and pain radiating to lower extremity.
5. The most common site of fracture was found at the inferior portion of 5th lumbar vertebral body.
6. The computed tomogram was needed for accurate diagnosis.
7. In all patients, we obtained excellent ressults with laminectomy, discectomy, and removal of bony fragment.
